Millions of people use contact lenses (隐型眼镜). For anyone who doesn't mind sticking his fingere in his eyes, there are clear advantages: contacts correct vision better than glasses, are less often crushed underfoot, don't make you look boring, and come in a huge variety of forms——soft, firm, colored, and even theatrical.

More and more people are turning to use of contact lenses. But are they safe?

Latest research from Austria shows that not all chemicals are effective in killing all germs(细菌)——and some of these germs can cause blindness in just 24 hours.

While most problems with contacts still can go back to poor hygiene (卫生) or overuse, not all sight-threatening conditions only happen to those who wash their lenses under the tap or decide, while tired and emotional, to sleep in their lenses for the third night running.

Two of the biggest eye-damaging killers——protozoan acanthamoeba and bacteria pseudomonas——as all around us, in our homes and water supplies. This seemingly harmless pair can cause blindness through keratitis(disease of the cornea) .

"The cornea (角膜) is like a five-layered sandwich," says Raymond Curran, a doctor from Omagh, Northern Ireland."Once the bacteria get into a layer they can reproduce there and turn the cornea opaque(too dark to see through) ."

An optician(验光师)may see one possibly sight-threatening case each month, but at an eye hospital there may be several each week. Acanthamoeba, often seemingly mild, can be misjudged until it is too late. Meanwhile, pseudomonas, more seriously, can cause increasing sight loss with each hour that passes. If not treated immediately, patients may need a corneal replacement.

And the really bad news, according to Professor Roger Buckley,at the Moorfields eye hospital in London, is that acanthamoeba is"one of the hardest germs on Earth"——it can survive in Antarctica.

67. In the passage the writer mainly wants to tell us ______.

A. the possible danger of contacts B. the importance of keeping contacts clean

C. some doctors' opinions about contacts D. the advantages and disadvantages of contacts

68. According to the text, the two major killer germs_______.

A. can be killed in chemicals too weak to live in hard conditions

C. can damage the cornea D. are hardly found in our surroundings

69. It becomes clear from the text that ______.

A. contacts should be cleaned under the tap

B. the germs can not be found and killed in hospitals

C. people will not be safe even if they clean their contacts every day

le will soon become blind if attacked by germs around us

70. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?

A. The cornea is made up of five layers. B. There are more types of contacts than glasses.

C. Sleeping with contacts will cause troubles.

D. People can see clearer with contacts than glasses.

E

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt)many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention ofcriticizing(批评)and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (模仿) . It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoidany contact (接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

71. People who are unhappy ______.

A. always consider things differently from others

B. usually are affected by the results of certain things

C. usually misunderstand what others think or say

D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things

72. The phrase"sour the pleasure of society"most nearly means"______".

A. have a good taste with social life B. make others unhappy

C. tend to scold others openly D. enjoy the pleasure of life

73. We can conclude from the passage that _____.

A. we should pity all such unhappy people B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life

C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness

D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons

74. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should

A. prevent any communication with them B. show no respect and politeness to them

C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects

D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

75. In this passage, the writer mainly ______.

A. describes two types of people B. laughs at the unhappy people

C. suggests ways to help the unhappy D. tells people how to be happy in life

W:No, of course not. It's on the dining table.

(Text 3)

W: It' s already 9:00. I wonder if Tom will come.

M:We are supposed to be here at 8:30. He told me he would start at 8:00.

W: Maybe something is wrong with him.

(Text 4)

M: Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the Grand Hotel? I thought it was on this corner but I seem to have made a mistake.

W: Hmm. I'm sorry. Maybe you should try calling them.

(Text 5)

M: I'm still waiting for the clerk to come back and make some copies of this paper for me.

W:Why trouble him? I'll show you how easy it is to work the machine.

(Text 6)

W: Good afternoon, Dr. Anderson's office.

M: Hello, my name is John Cremer, and I was hoping I could come in today to see the doctor.

W: Are you a patient of Doctor Anderson?

M: Well, no. I'm in town at a conference and the manager of the hotel where I am staying suggested that I call you.

W:What seems to be the problem?

M:Well, I got this ringing in my ears.

W: The doctor will be busy at the hospital until this evening. So the earliest you could see him would be tomorrow morning at ten.

M:I'll come in then if that's OK.

(Text 7)

W: What a great day, don't you think?

M: I guess so. I didn't notice. I feel terrible because I watched television until after midnight last night.

W: After midnight! Did you watch so late because you were bored? I usually watch TV only if I have nothing better to do.

M: Bored? No, I was unhappy because I left my meal tickets in the dining room. There's more than fifty dollars worth of meal tickets lost.

W: So, did watching TV make you feel better?

M: Well, I felt a bit better while I was watching. You know, it took my mind off my troubles. But after I turned the TV off, I just felt even worse with myself for wasting so much time.

W: I've had that feeling before.

(Text 8)

M: Jane! Imagine seeing you here.

W:Bob! Glad to see you too. I haven't seen you for ages.

M: You know, I've been hoping to get hold of you. Would you be able to come over this Friday? My sister just returned from a trip to Canada. She'll be staying with us for a few days. I thought you two might like to get to know each other since you two are both botanists.

W:Oh! I'd love to. But I can't. I have to go up to my younger brother's graduation on Friday right after work. It takes four hours to get to Seattle, you know.

M: Stattle? I thought you were from Portland.

W:No,I just lived there for a few years.

M:Well,it's really too bad you can't make it. When my sister was in Canada, she spent the whole time taking pictures of plants. I can't believe how good some of them are.

W: Is there any chance that you could ask her to stay around for a little bit longer? I'll be getting back early Sunday.

M: I doubt whether we can get her to stay much longer. She is busy.

W: Well, if I can't get hold of ber this time, maybe I'll have to wait till the next time she comes around.

(Text 9)

M: Hi, Judy. How about helping me carry some of these books back to the house, can you? If I try and do it myself ,I think I'll break my arms.

W:Wow, where did you get so many books —rob a librarian? Oh no, don't tell me you are going to open a bookstore.

M: Very funny. I was at the bookstore the whole day. After Chirstmas many books that were not popular were on sale. And I picked up so many really interesting ones. Take a look.

W: "Speak Chinese", "Introduction to Aisa""Arts and Culture". Are you planning to get a job in Asia?

M: Well, they are all interesting but I bought these books because they were worth the money . I couldn't afford them if they were new. If you help me carry them I'll let you have one.

W: I'd certainly like to pick one. Now let me help you.
